York Maine Wedding Photographer | Stage Neck Inn, York Harbor Inn & the Coast In Between
There is something about York, Maine that quietly takes your breath away — the way the Atlantic breaks against the rocky coastline, the way golden afternoon light falls across a saltwater lawn, the way a harbor dotted with lobster boats looks in early October. I am Marc Sadowski, and over nearly two decades of photographing weddings throughout southern Maine and New Hampshire, York has become one of my favorite destinations. The landscape here is a genuine creative partner, and the weddings I have photographed along this stretch of coast are some of the most beautiful work of my career.
Stage Neck Inn sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, and it is one of the most photogenic wedding venues in all of New England. The front lawn ceremony space faces directly out toward the open water, with the York River estuary and the rocky coastline framing the scene on either side. I photographed Lia and Max's fall wedding here, and the day delivered everything this venue promises — a ceremony on the oceanfront lawn beneath an October sky, bridal portraits on the dramatic stone steps that descend to the crashing surf, and a bride's lace gown hanging in the doorway of the inn as the morning light came through. The variety of portrait locations on the property alone is remarkable, and the fall foliage that surrounds York Harbor in October turns the whole setting into something almost impossible to believe.
Across the harbor sits the York Harbor Inn, a historic property with a warmth and character all its own. The inn's outdoor ceremony space faces the Atlantic, and the surrounding grounds spill down toward York Harbor Beach — a public park that becomes one of the best portrait locations in the entire area. Rebecca and Jeremy's summer wedding here was full of energy and color: coral and peach florals, a joyful walk down the aisle with her father, a first kiss right at the water's edge, and portraits on the rocks with the harbor stretching behind them. The Yorkshire Ballroom inside, with its soaring cathedral ceiling and dramatic skylight atrium, finished the evening in style. The York Harbor Inn is also wonderfully set up for elopements and intimate celebrations, which brings me to Marika and Josh.
Marika and Josh eloped in York Harbor on a spectacular fall afternoon, and the freedom that comes with an elopement — no timeline pressure, no logistics to manage, just two people and a photographer moving through a beautiful place — produced some of my favorite images from anywhere. We followed the light as it moved across the harbor, stopped wherever something caught our eye, and let the afternoon unfold naturally. That responsiveness is the great gift of elopement photography, and York rewards it generously. If you are considering eloping on the Maine coast, I cannot recommend this area highly enough.
No conversation about wedding photography in York would be complete without Cape Neddick Light — Nubble Lighthouse — one of the most iconic images on the entire New England coast. The rocky outcroppings at Sohier Park, with the brilliant white lighthouse across the tidal channel, create a portrait backdrop that instantly communicates where you are: this is Maine, and it is extraordinary. Beyond the Nubble, the York area is full of locations I have come to know intimately over the years — the bluffs above York Beach, the stone seawall at Stage Neck, the stretches of wet sand at low tide that reflect the sky like a mirror. That local knowledge shapes every wedding I photograph here.
