A Surprise Proposal in the Sky – Ryan & Marissa’s Hot Air Balloon Engagement

Over the years, I’ve photographed countless weddings and engagements—but few things are as thrilling and heartfelt as a surprise proposal. So when Ryan reached out with a sunrise hot air balloon proposal in mind, I was instantly on board. I mean… how could I say no to photographing a life-changing moment while floating above the treetops?

The ride was arranged through A&A Balloon Rides, based in Salem, NH. Along for the journey were Marissa’s sister and her fiancé, their dad, a couple of close friends, and of course our pilot. With a full basket, I needed a solid cover story to stay undercover. Thankfully, I coordinated with Andre—the awesome owner of A&A—and posed as the company's social media manager and content creator for the morning.

As the balloon lifted into the air and we soared into the golden light of dawn, the big moment came. Down on the ground, a massive “Will You Marry Me?” banner was revealed. Marissa looked over the edge—and gasped. Ryan got down on one knee mid-flight, and just like that, magic happened. (Spoiler alert: she said yes!)

From there, we enjoyed an absolutely breathtaking ride. The skies were crystal clear, the morning light was perfect, and the joy in the air was contagious.
