Capturing Connection at the HCMA 2024 Annual Patient Meeting
Boston Seaport Hotel | Boston, MA | October 2024
Every so often, an event comes along that reminds you exactly why you do this work. The HCMA 2024 Annual Patient Meeting at the Boston Seaport Hotel was one of those events. The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association brings together patients, families, medical professionals, and researchers each year for a gathering built around education, community, and hope. Being trusted to document it was both a professional privilege and a genuinely moving experience.
Throughout the day, I moved between keynote presentations and the sponsor hall, capturing the moments that make a conference feel alive. The keynote sessions were rich with information and emotion, with speakers addressing everything from the latest research in HCM treatment to the lived realities of managing the condition day to day. The sponsor booths gave attendees a chance to connect directly with organizations and companies working to improve outcomes for the HCM community, and there was a real energy in those conversations that I tried to reflect in the images.
What stayed with me most were the patients themselves. Many in attendance had undergone heart transplants, and their presence at an event like this carries a weight that is hard to put into words. Alongside them, families of heart donors were honored with quiet dignity throughout the day. Photographing those moments required care above all else, and I was grateful for the trust the HCMA community extended to me as an outsider with a camera. There is something profound about bearing witness to that kind of resilience and generosity in the same room.
Corporate and nonprofit event photography is a meaningful part of my work, and events like this one are a reminder that the images go well beyond documentation. They become part of how an organization tells its story, celebrates its community, and honors the people at its heart. If your organization is planning a conference, patient meeting, or community event in New England and you are looking for a photographer who will bring the same intentionality to a boardroom as to a wedding ceremony, I would love to connect.
